Our dedicated team from Ibounty Foundation in collaboration with Map Kibera led a Green Energy drive in Kibera, on the outskirts of Nairobi City. The event, which took place on Tuesday, 20th February, 2023, marked the beginning of our Solar Powered Community initiative in Kenya’s low-income settlements.

Kibera is one of the largest slums or informal settlements in Africa. Its population is estimated to be between 200,000 to 1 million people, although precise figures are difficult to determine due to the informal nature of the settlement. Since most of the housing in Kibera consists of makeshift structures constructed from mud, corrugated iron sheets, and other scavenged materials, these structures are often overcrowded and lack basic amenities such as running water, electricity, and sanitation facilities.

Ibounty Foundation came in to bridge the amenities gap, eventually sorting out the lighting and security challenge that has been rampant among small scale vendors. In keeping with our rallying call “Eyes on Sustainable Future” we aim to support low-income communities with affordable solar charging lamps that allows them to spend more time selling their commodities and offering services to the public for longer hours.

This is just the beginning as we set sights on enabling more men, women, and youth of Kibera earn extra income by selling for longer hours in secure environments.
